Fully Realized Project

The genre of zines really spoke to me, especially during my work on my third experiment.  For my final project, I wanted to take the freedom and creativity involved in a zine, and marry it with narrative writing. I have always wanted to write a memoir, and this felt like a perfect opportunity to experiment with what that would look like. I knew that I wanted the work to be about me and my experiences up until now. I've been through what feels like many lifetimes, so if I could use those experiences to help others, or help them to feel less alone, that's what I want to do. â€‹

In this project, I wanted to cover the bigger stories of my life, up to my leukemia diagnosis. I planned to use mostly photos I've taken myself, and on each page, the backdrop was taken by me. The sky slowly shifts through the narrative along with what's happening in the story to help with the tone and mood. I also included some photos of important people or memories in my life, and included captions. The entire work is handwritten, and for this reason I decided to split this memoir into a series. For this project, I've completed the first zine in the series.

Please enjoy "The Story of My Life: Vol. 1". It's a creative non-fiction narrative in a zine format. This work covers memories from my youth up until my cancer diagnosis in December 2021.
